What do elegant and earthy mean when describing a wine?
When used outside the world of wine, elegant is a high compliment, connoting an exceptional combination of grace, balance and beauty. When used to describe a wine, elegant means the same thing -- the wine's levels of acidity and tannin, alcohol and sugar are in perfect balance. It has power and intensity, but it is not overpowering or dominating. A truly elegant wine is one to be savored.
Earthy, at its best, implies a pleasant, clean quality that adds complexity to aromas and flavors. Think of the smells you might encounter during a walk in the woods: moist earth, underbrush, a just-raked pile of leaves. However, the term can be used in a negative way to describe a funky character that borders on foul.
